Alabama redshirt freshman tight end Ty Lockwood has announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal, seeking increased playing time and a more prominent role in collegiate football.
Lockwood, a former four-star recruit from Independence High School in Tennessee, was ranked as the No. 242 overall prospect and the No. 14 tight end in the 2023 recruiting class.
During his tenure at Alabama, Lockwood faced significant competition at the tight end position. In 2024, he appeared in five games, recording a single reception for five yards against Mercer. Despite his potential, he found himself behind players like Josh Cuevas and Danny Lewis on the depth chart.
The Crimson Tide’s recruitment of two incoming freshman tight ends further intensified the competition, potentially limiting Lockwood’s opportunities for increased playing time in the future.
In light of these factors, Lockwood has decided to explore opportunities elsewhere, aiming to find a program where he can make a more immediate impact on the field. His departure marks the 20th player from Alabama to enter the transfer portal this season, reflecting the dynamic nature of college football rosters in the current era.
As Lockwood seeks a new program, he will have three years of eligibility remaining, offering him ample time to develop his skills and contribute significantly to his future team’s success.
