The Ohio State fandom is being fully embraced by Kirk Herbstreit ahead of the National Championship game.
ESPN will have the former Buckeyes quarterback call Monday night’s game.
In the booth, the Ohio State Buckeyes will have one of their own on the call when they play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Monday night’s CFP national championship game.
Kirk Herbstreit, a quarterback for the Buckeyes from 1989 to 1993, will be joining play-by-play partner Chris Fowler in Atlanta for color commentary, and he isn’t hiding his OSU passion.
“At the end of the day, I’m no different than anybody sitting on their couch. I just prepare and talk about it,” Herbstreit explained at Saturday’s media day in Atlanta. “I’m an Ohio State junkie. And so when they do well, and I’m able to enjoy it, there’s nobody more thrilled than me. So yeah, I’ll be locked in, and if that scarlet gray confetti comes down, I’m gonna be trying to race to get to the field to hug my son and be a part of that celebration if they’re lucky enough to win.”
Late last year, Herbstreit’s younger son committed to play quarterback for the rival Michigan Wolverines, while his older son, Zak, is a senior tight end for Ohio State.
After losing to Michigan in The Game in late November, the Buckeyes enter Monday night’s championship game on a three-game winning streak, while their opponents, Notre Dame, have won 13 straight games.
Kickoff at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is set for 7:30 p.m. EST.
