The situation currently unfolding in Maryland is influencing the coaching landscape across college basketball. According to reports, this impact has now reached College Station.
According to Jeff Goodman
from The Field of 68, Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams is reportedly interested in the Maryland coaching position if Kevin Willard departs. Willard, meanwhile, remains linked to the ongoing vacancy at Villanova.
Goodman tweeted on Friday that, according to a source, Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams is looking to get involved with Maryland if and when the position becomes available.
Willard remains the central figure in this situation more than Williams. With a career record of 335-249 (.574) and a 65-39 (.625) mark over three seasons at Maryland, he has recently been linked to the Villanova job following Kyle Neptune’s firing two weeks ago. His strong NCAA Tournament run has further fueled speculation, especially regarding the resources available to him at College Park. Despite having his best season yet with a 27-9 (.750) record and leading the Terrapins back to the Sweet 16, questions about his long-term future remain.
Maryland’s season concluded last night with a loss to Florida. Following the defeat, reports suggested that Willard intended to take the Villanova job, but as of Friday afternoon, no further updates have emerged.
If Willard were to leave Maryland, the coaching carousel would shift to filling the vacancy with the Terrapins. That’s where Buzz Williams enters the picture, following his sixth season with Texas A&M. Williams, who holds a career record of 373-228 (.621), has gone 120-73 (.622) during his tenure with the Aggies, building a résumé similar to his previous stints at Virginia Tech and Marquette.
It remains to be seen whether the Maryland job will even become available. However, if it does, Williams could quickly emerge as a candidate, given his reported interest, according to Goodman.
