Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck will miss the remainder of the 2024 football season after undergoing successful surgery on his right elbow to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). The procedure was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, California. Beck is expected to make a full recovery, with plans to resume throwing by the spring of 2025.
Beck sustained the injury during the SEC Championship Game against Texas on December 7. On the final play of the first half, he was hit while attempting a Hail Mary pass, resulting in damage to his throwing elbow. Backup quarterback Gunner Stockton replaced Beck in the second half, leading the Bulldogs to a 22-19 overtime victory.
Throughout the season, Beck had been instrumental in Georgia’s success, amassing over 3,400 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His performance positioned him as a top prospect for the upcoming NFL Draft.
In Beck’s absence, redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton is expected to take over as the starting quarterback. Stockton, who stepped in during the SEC Championship Game, completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards with one interception. Head coach Kirby Smart expressed confidence in Stockton’s abilities, stating that increased practice reps and preparation time would aid his readiness for the upcoming College Football Playoff.
Georgia, holding the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff, is set to face the winner of the Notre Dame vs. Indiana matchup in the Sugar Bowl on January 1. While Beck’s absence is a significant setback, the Bulldogs remain focused on their pursuit of a national championship, relying on Stockton to lead the offense in the critical postseason games ahead.
