University of Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer officially announced the addition of Jason Jones as the Crimson Tide’s new Assistant Defensive Backs Coach on Friday.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to add Coach Jones to our staff,” said DeBoer. “He has a proven track record of success with defensive backs, and I know he will make a significant impact on that group, along with our defense as a whole. It’s also great to add someone who played and coached here, as his knowledge of this university is invaluable.”
Jones, a 20-year coaching veteran, brings extensive experience working with secondaries and boasts six seasons as a defensive coordinator. Over his career, he has mentored nine first-team all-conference players, 20 total all-conference selections, four Jim Thorpe Award semifinalists, and one Nagurski Trophy finalist. He has also been part of five conference championship teams and coached in 16 bowl games.
“The University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa are special places to me,” said Jones. “My coaching career started here as a graduate assistant, and to be able to return and coach at my alma mater is truly a blessing. I am so thankful to Coach DeBoer for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to get to work.”
Jones earned his undergraduate degree in financial planning from Alabama in 2001 and a master’s degree in sport management in 2005. A three-year letterman as a defensive back for the Crimson Tide, he played on three bowl teams and was part of Alabama’s 1996 SEC West title and the 1999 SEC Championship team.
Coaching Journey
Jones returns to Alabama after stints at North Carolina (2022-23), Indiana (2020-22), FAU (2019), Ole Miss (2013-18), and Oklahoma State (2008-12). His tenure at Ole Miss included recognition as the National Defensive Backs Coach of the Year in 2014. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Alabama (2003-04) before stops at Tulsa and Rice.
Jason Jones and his wife, Kysha, have four children – Andrew, Jace, Jarah, and Jathan.
While the financial terms of his appointment remain subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, the announcement marks the latest step in Alabama’s efforts to strengthen its coaching staff under DeBoer’s leadership.
