ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Gleaton Jones, a former University of Georgia football player and South Georgia native, passed away on Friday following a car accident in Florida.
Jones, a running back for the UGA football team in 2021, died as confirmed by his obituary from Mathews Funeral Home in Albany.
Originally from Albany, Jones was involved in the accident on St. George Island, as reported by WALB, a sister station in Albany.
The crash occurred on December 10, leaving Jones in critical condition. According to the Red and Black, UGA’s independent student news organization, Jones suffered a severe brain injury and required surgery.
Barstool UGA, an affiliate of Barstool Sports, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share news of Jones’ passing.
Jones attended the University of Georgia after graduating from Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany, where he earned All-State, All-Region, and All-Albany honors.
A memorial service for Jones will be held on Monday, December 16, at Wynfield Plantation in Albany, located over two hours southwest of Atlanta.
