In a significant development for Ohio’s political landscape, Governor Mike DeWine has nominated former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel as the state’s next lieutenant governor. This appointment follows the vacancy left by Jon Husted, who was selected to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President J.D. Vance.
Governor DeWine praised Tressel as a “natural leader” with deep ties to Ohio, emphasizing his extensive experience in education and leadership. “Jim Tressel is Ohio values. He’s a hard worker and shares that vision for the future of Ohio,” DeWine stated during the announcement.
Tressel, 72, is best known for his tenure as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team from 2001 to 2010, during which he led the team to a national championship in 2002 and secured six Big Ten championships. Following his coaching career, he served as president of Youngstown State University from 2014 until his retirement in 2023, further solidifying his commitment to education and community development in Ohio.
Expressing his gratitude and acknowledging the new challenges ahead, Tressel remarked, “I don’t know this world. Fortunately, I believe in our governor and what he believes in. And my first job is to go to school on that.” He also emphasized his willingness to learn and adapt to his new role in public service.
The nomination now awaits approval from the Ohio Senate and House, both of which hold Republican majorities. If confirmed, Tressel will bring a unique blend of leadership experience from both the athletic and academic arenas to the state’s executive branch.
This appointment has been met with enthusiasm from various sectors, including business groups that highlight Tressel’s dedication to workforce development. Steve Stivers, President & CEO of the Ohio Chamber, noted, “With his wealth of experience in the education field, Jim understands its importance in building Ohio’s workforce of tomorrow.”
As Ohioans anticipate Tressel’s potential contributions in his new role, his history of leadership and commitment to the state’s values suggest a promising tenure ahead.
