Texas — Texas A&M University’s border collie mascot, Reveille X, underwent surgery to remove her right eye due to glaucoma, according to university president Mark A. Welsh III. The procedure was performed after veterinarians noticed discomfort and cloudiness in her eye, prompting the removal as a precautionary measure due to abnormal tissue.
Welsh announced on the university’s website that Reveille X, affectionately called the “First Lady of Aggieland,” successfully completed the surgery and is now recovering comfortably at home. The Reveille mascot tradition began in 1931 when cadets brought an injured dog to campus, naming her Reveille after she barked during the morning bugle call.
Reveille X, who became the mascot in 2021, travels around campus in a customized golf cart dubbed “Rev Force One.” She will temporarily pause her public appearances during recovery but is expected to resume her duties—such as attending classes, cheering for the Aggies, and managing campus squirrels—by fall, according to her veterinary team.
