Rodney Newsom, a former offensive lineman for Western Kentucky, is set to transfer to South Carolina for the upcoming season, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. After spending one season with the Hilltoppers, Newsom will have two years of eligibility left.
The 6-foot-3 offensive lineman appeared in all 14 games for WKU last season. He had joined the team during the offseason after spending a year at Itawamba Community College in Mississippi.
Newsom played high school football at Briarcrest Christian in Tennessee, where he was rated a three-star recruit in the 2020 class. According to the On3 Industry Ranking—a weighted average of ratings from all four major recruiting media outlets—he was ranked as the No. 2,256 overall player and the No. 158 interior offensive lineman in his class.
Newsom started his college career at Memphis, spending two seasons with the Tigers before transferring to Itawamba. In the transfer portal, he is ranked as the No. 119 overall player and the No. 11 interior offensive lineman, according to On3’s Transfer Portal Player Rankings.
Rodney Newsom becomes the seventh addition to the Gamecocks’ transfer portal class, joining EDGE Jaylen Brown (Missouri), interior offensive lineman Nick Sharpe (Wake Forest), tight end Jordan Dingle (Kentucky), defensive tackle Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy (Texas A&M), linebacker Shawn Murphy, and quarterback Air Noland (Ohio State).
