Former Florida defensive lineman Kelby Collins
has committed to Alabama. After spending two seasons in Gainesville, Collins is returning to his home state to continue his college career with the Crimson Tide. This marks a valuable addition for head coach Kalen DeBoer, who aims to make significant moves in the NCAA transfer portal this offseason.
Kelby Collins has two years of eligibility remaining. This past season, he appeared in just six games, recording six tackles. However, Collins was more impactful as a true freshman, playing in 12 games and registering 23 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, four quarterback hurries, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the Freshman All-SEC Team.
Alabama will add Collins to a defensive line group in need of depth and talent heading into the 2025 season. His specific role in Tuscaloosa has yet to be determined, as he will need to find his fit within Kane Wommack’s defensive system. At Florida, Collins showcased versatility, playing both on the interior and occasionally on the edge.
Collins’ development will progress at Alabama, with the aim of replicating or exceeding his performance from the 2023 season. The expectation is for him to fulfil the potential he showed as a highly sought-after recruit during his high school career.
Alabama was heavily involved in Collins’ recruitment during his high school days, with Nick Saban determined to keep the talented in-state prospect close to home. Despite Alabama’s efforts, Billy Napier’s staff secured a significant victory by landing Collins. Georgia was also in the mix, highlighting the intense competition among SEC powerhouses for his commitment.
Two years later, things have potentially come full circle. Collins will play for Alabama after all and potentially finish his career out with them
Collins played high school football at Gardendale High School in Alabama, where he was a highly-rated four-star prospect. According to the On3 Industry Ranking—a composite that factors in evaluations from all four major recruiting media outlets—he was ranked as the No. 45 overall recruit in the 2023 class.
