After making an official visit late in the season and returning to Gainesville in January to observe current players, cornerback Onis Konanbanny has now switched his commitment to the Florida Gators.
The three-star prospect from Columbia (S.C.) Heathwood Hall Episcopal School had been committed to Tennessee since August 23.
The Gators were not widely linked to Konanbanny throughout most of the recruiting cycle, though they did extend an offer in 2023 when Corey Raymond was still on staff. However, his first visit to Gainesville didn’t happen until November, and significant speculation began emerging on the morning of his final day on campus.
Following that, Konanbanny chose not to sign in December and kept in close contact with the Gators. This resulted in secondary coach Will Harris visiting him on the first day of the contact period and persuading him to make one final trip to the Swamp on January 17, ultimately securing his commitment.
Billy Napier and assistant secondary coach Beyah Rasool also played a role in Konanbanny’s recruitment. However, the majority of the credit for securing his flip goes to Will Harris.
“The highlight was coming to the building, the first time here, and feeling like I’m needed and wanted here,” Konanbanny said after his visit. “The game atmosphere, it was crazy and it probably gets crazier at night too. I like how the team played. They played with resilience, never gave up and came out on top
“The time around the staff was wonderful too. It was cool; it was great. Coach Napier has really done a good job bringing in the right people. It’s the right people, the right staff and the right people with great hearts. He’s going to bring in the right players too. Also, not just great players, but great human beings and that’s how the program is going to keep going up.”
Standing at 6-foot-0.5 and 175 pounds, Onis Konanbanny is ranked as the No. 42 cornerback and No. 412 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking. He becomes part of a strong defensive back class that includes five-star cornerback Ben Hanks Jr. and four-star safeties Hylton Stubbs and Lagonza Hayward.
