In a major recruiting coup for the Ohio State Buckeyes, four-star defensive lineman Khary Wilder has announced his commitment to the program, choosing Columbus over powerhouse contenders Notre Dame, Washington, and UCLA. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound standout from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California, is a prized addition to Ohio State’s 2026 recruiting class, bringing elite athleticism and versatility to an already formidable defensive front.
Wilder, ranked as the No. 24 defensive lineman and No. 247 overall prospect in the 2026 class by the On3 Industry Ranking, has been a national target since his recruitment gained momentum earlier this year. His decision comes after a series of official visits, including a highly impactful trip to Ohio State on May 31, which he described as “eye-opening” in an interview with On3. The Buckeyes’ coaching staff, led by defensive line coach Larry Johnson, played a pivotal role in securing Wilder’s commitment, emphasizing his fit within their scheme and the program’s track record of developing NFL-ready defensive linemen.
“Ohio State just felt like the right place for me,” Wilder told On3’s Chad Simmons. “The culture, the coaching, and the opportunity to compete at the highest level—it’s everything I’m looking for.” Wilder’s commitment marks a significant win for Johnson, who has a storied history of molding elite defensive talent, including NFL stars like Chase Young and Joey Bosa.
Wilder’s on-field prowess is well-documented. Over three varsity seasons at Junipero Serra, he has amassed an impressive 190 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 19 sacks, and a staggering 69 quarterback hurries. His ability to dominate as both an edge rusher and interior lineman makes him a rare commodity. Scouting reports highlight his 80-inch wingspan, explosive first step, and “grown man strength,” noting his potential to project as a three-technique or traditional tackle at the next level. “He’s a dominant inside/outside lineman who can beat an opposing guard or tackle with quickness and power,” one analyst noted.
The recruitment battle for Wilder was intense, with Notre Dame, Washington, and UCLA making strong pushes. Notre Dame, in particular, had gained traction after hosting Wilder on June 13, with defensive line coach Nick Sebastian building a strong relationship. UCLA, benefiting from proximity to Wilder’s hometown and the persistent efforts of defensive line coach Jethro Franklin, was considered a frontrunner early on. Washington, under new head coach Jedd Fisch, also remained in contention, hosting Wilder on June 21. Ultimately, Ohio State’s combination of prestige, development opportunities, and a clear vision for Wilder’s role tipped the scales.
This commitment bolsters Ohio State’s 2026 class, which is shaping up to be one of the nation’s best. Wilder joins a defensive line group that will benefit from his versatility and relentless motor. As the Buckeyes aim to maintain their dominance in the Big Ten and compete for national titles,
