Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko issued a candid appeal during a tumultuous transfer portal season. The NCAA’s new rules opened the portal on December 9th and will close it on December 28th, creating significant challenges for programs and student-athletes alike. Many teams are now forced to focus on recruiting prospective transfers rather than preparing for their bowl games. Meanwhile, schools competing in the College Football Playoff face the added pressure of balancing recruitment with playoff preparations.
In an interview with Texas A&M beat writer Carter Kareels, head coach Mike Elko shared his thoughts on the current state of college football.
“It (the state of college football) is for sure crazier than it’s ever been. I think now more than ever; this sport needs somebody to step in and create some type of rules and regulations. I’m all for the portal. I’m all for NIL. I have zero problems managing those things. But there is an awful lot of unregulated, bad stuff going on right now. And it will impact young people and their futures, so probably now more than ever, coaches are calling for someone to step in and regulate this thing at some level.”
