South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley has been named one of four finalists for The Dawn Staley Award, as announced today by the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia.
The award honors the NCAA Division I women’s basketball player who best embodies the skills Staley displayed throughout her career—ball-handling, scoring, playmaking, and a relentless will to win.
Fulwiley was recently recognized as the SEC Sixth Woman of the Year and earned All-SEC Second Team honors from league coaches. She followed that up with a standout performance in the SEC Tournament, securing a spot on the All-Tournament Team as South Carolina captured its third consecutive title.
A native of Columbia, S.C., Fulwiley is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.0 points per game, which increases to 13.4 points in SEC play. She has scored in double figures in 11 of her last 13 games, including a career-high 24 points at Vanderbilt, and has been the team’s leading scorer in seven games.
Her impact has been equally impressive on defense, where she has embraced a bigger role in SEC play. She ranks 10th in the league in blocks per game, making her the top shot-blocking guard in the SEC, and ninth in steals per game. She has recorded at least three steals in eight games, including five against top-15 opponents.
