Alabama transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan is scheduled to visit Georgia this week, as confirmed by On3’s Pete Nakos. The initial report came from ESPN’s Max Olson.
Lonergan, a redshirt freshman, has served as a backup for the Crimson Tide over the past two years. During that time, he has thrown eight passes in-game for a total of 35 yards. Despite limited playing time, he was highly regarded as a recruit coming out of high school.
Hailing from Georgia, Lonergan was a four-star recruit in the class of 2023. The On3 Industry Rankings, a proprietary system that combines ratings from the four major recruiting services, ranked him as the No. 13 quarterback and the No. 162 overall player nationally in his class.
Lonergan initially committed to Alabama, selecting the Crimson Tide over offers from Stanford, South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina, among others.
A Georgia native, Lonergan attended Brookwood High School before joining Alabama. During his junior year, he amassed 3,932 total yards and 39 touchdowns. Following his senior season, he earned a spot in the Under Armour All-America game.
The announcement of Lonergan entering the transfer portal came just days after Alabama was excluded from the 2024 College Football Playoff. Despite being on the cusp of selection, the three-loss Crimson Tide missed out, with two-loss ACC runner-up SMU securing the at-large spot instead.
The transfer portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. During the 2023-24 school year, over 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered the NCAA’s transfer database. After accounting for those who withdrew or declared for the pros, the final number of transfers stood at 2,707.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, this means that approximately 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players entered the transfer portal in a single year.
