Junior Texas football cornerback Jay’Vion Cole announced on his X account on December 10 that he will be entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. He becomes the second Texas player to make this announcement on the same day, bringing the total number of players from the team entering the portal to seven.
On December 10, cornerback Jay’Vion Cole and senior defensive tackle Tia Savea became the two Texas players to announce they will be entering the transfer portal.
Both Cole and Savea played one season at Texas after transferring from programs located closer to or on the West Coast. Cole joined the Longhorns from the San Jose State Spartans last offseason, while Savea also made the move after a stint at a West Coast program.
Cole struggled to get significant playing time for the Longhorns this fall, largely due to stiff competition at the cornerback position. With additional reps going to players like Gavin Holmes and freshman Kobe Black, Cole appeared in just four games this season.
Texas brought Cole in during the spring transfer window last offseason to address a depth need at cornerback. However, the team later shifted senior defensive back Jahdae Barron from the star position to cornerback, a move that proved successful as Barron went on to lead the SEC in interceptions and become a finalist for the Thorpe Award.
Cole appeared in four games for the Longhorns this season, recording one tackle and an interception during Week 4 against UL-Monroe.
In 2023, Cole was one of the top-performing cornerbacks in the Mountain West Conference while at San Jose State. He recorded 38 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and one fumble recovery during the season.
The other five Texas players who have entered the transfer portal for the winter window are redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe, redshirt freshman EDGE Tausili Akana, redshirt freshman outside linebacker Derion Gullette, redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Aaron Bryant, and sophomore wide receiver Johntay Cook II.
